Jor-El: Live as one of them, Kal-El, to discover where your strength and your power are needed. Always hold in your heart the pride of your special heritage. They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son.

The movie open with Jor-El (Marlon Brando) speaking in a court about General Zod and two of his followers who tried to overthrow the Council and create a new order. They are sentenced to isolation in the Phantom Zone.

I really love the scenes on Krypton with Brando. Jor-El feels that Krypton is going to explode, but the council doesn't agree with him. Jor-el sends his son in a rocket to the yellow sunned earth, where he will have great powers. He also sends along some glowing crystals.

The rocket lands in Smallville, and Kal-El is taken in by Ma and Pa Kent and called Clark. Clark hides his powers from his class mates and pretends to be something of a nerd. After Pa Kent dies, Clark, now a teenager finds the crystals. He leaves Smallville and goes to the Artic North where, with the crystals, he constructs the Fortress of Solitude, where he will about the universe and about himself.

Clark gets a job at the Daily Planet where he meets Lois Lane, Perry White and Jimmy Olsen. We also meet Lex Luthor, played by Gene Hackman and his cohorts. Clark continues his bumbling act, while using his super powers when they are needed (mostly in saving Lois). When Superman rescues a falling Lois in public, the whole world finds out about Superman. Superman is soon patrolling Metropolis and doing good.

The movie had two sets of criminals. The first set led by the evil genius Lex Luthor and played with comedic tones. Lex tricks Superman and exposes him to Kryptonite. But one of Lex's followers helps Superman who then goes off and saves the world from Lex's evil plot.

When Lois gets killed, Superman revolves the earth the wrong way to go back in time so he can save her.

This movie was really the first super hero movie, and it was very well done.
